Four years ago Wests took on the challenge of reinstating women’s football after many years without any formal female football as such.
Around 15% of our junior playing numbers are female and as a club we owe these young women the chance to grow and develop their skills within the club. We started with a women’s social side that was predominantly made up of mums from the club that wanted to give football a go and enjoy the social side of the club. Now in the fourth year these ladies continue to enjoy their football and friendships and this groups numbers are quite remarkable with over 25 players in their a squad.
From there in 2017 Capital Football invited Wests into the women’s W-League and with our partnership with Olé Football Academy a team was pulled together and finished mid table which was a remarkable result. For 2019 this squad will be so much stronger and we look forward to watching their progress. New in 2019 we have a female U18 side which bridges the gap between junior football and women’s football.
Female players aged from 14-18 are encouraged in an environment where fun is a big component in these nine-a-side games.
KPMG and Pak N Save Porirua have been fantastic in supporting our females in football programmes.
