Frequently Asked Questions
NZ Football, Wellington's Capital Football and the other federations around New Zealand use the 'Under X' or 'UX' (e.g. Under 17 or U17) terminology to describe playing grades. This is also the terminology that Western Suburbs uses. The term itself, we know, is slightly confusing, as what it actually means is that specific age and the age below - e.g. a U11 grade includes players that will turn 11 this year (i.e. are aged 10 right now), or have turned 11 since the start of the year.
A couple of examples:
- Jessie is currently 16 but will turn 17 in August this year - Jessie will play in the U17 grade
- Chris turned 12 in January this year - Chris will play in the U12 grade
- Sally is currently 6 and will turn 7 in December this year - Sally will play in the U7 grade
There are a couple of exceptions to the above:
- Female players can elect to play a grade down if they choose. E.g. Beth is turning 13 later this year but has decided to play down a grade - Beth will play in the U12 grade
- Dispensations can be applied for if a male player would like to play up or down a grade. The process is covered in this Capital Football page. Dispensation needs to be approved by Capital Football and normally requires supporting evidence.
- Western Suburbs occasionally doesn't have enough players to make up a team (or sometimes too many players) in a particular grade. E.g. there are no U14 or U16 grades at Wests in 2021/2022 so U13 or U15 players move directly to the U15 or U17 grades respectively.
The registration process at Wests automatically narrows down the teams available to select on the registration form based on the age of the player. If you have any questions or are not able to select a grade based on an existing dispensation, please select the available grade and add a note in the registration form. Alternatively, send the club administrator an email on office@westernsuburbs.co.nz.

Registering yourself or another child as a player after the initial registration process is done within the club portal. This means that the only time we will ever ask you for all of your registration information is the very first time you register using the new Westerns Suburbs portal. For subsequent registrations (yourself or your children), all of your relevant details will already be prepopulated in your personalised club portal.
