Wests Warriors have a good day at Wynton Rufer 2016

Three Western Suburbs ninth grade teams – the Jets, Gladiators and Warriors – attended the 2016 Wynton Rufer tournament at Hutt Park on Sunday 15 May. It was great to see such a good representation from the club!

The Western Suburbs Warriors managed to win the 9th grade ‘A’ division of the tournament.

In their four pool games they had three wins and a draw, including a very enjoyable “local derby” against the Gladiators.  The game was played in amazing spirit between a big group of friends and afterwards, the sight of both teams joining together for the “three cheers” was awesome. We have to mention Ryan’s headed goal from a corner in that game and Addison, who also scored one with his head. Ben also scored an amazing goal in that game – a thunderbolt which crashed off the crossbar and into the net.

In the semi-final, the Warriors played North Wellington, who had beaten them the previous day. It was a titanic battle which eventually finished 0-0 after extra-time. The Warriors’ goal difference was enough though to see them through to the final. Special mention to Fletch in goal who pulled off an amazing save late in the game which eventually got us into the final.

The final was against Miramar Rangers, a team we always have great games against; in fact, the Warriors have played them in the final of this tournament the last two years, losing both times. After five tough games, the boys went out and played brilliantly. It was 0-0 at half-time, but early in the second half, Jonny swivelled to volley home a goal to put us 1-0 up. From then on, it was such a tight game, but the desire and passion shown by the boys to hold their lead was incredible. Liam was fantastic in goal and the defending of Ryan, Rhys, Malakye, Fletcher and Josh was lion-hearted. When the final whistle went, the boys were delighted, but also humble in victory, consoling their mates in the Miramar side.

A special mention to the parents, family and supporters who turned out in massive numbers to support the team. It was a special day, following which I’m sure there were some tired boys, enjoying a good night’s sleep!

Congrats Western Suburbs Warriors. You did the club proud.
