Western Suburbs Juniors enjoy success at Taupo tournament

Western Suburbs were well represented at the largest junior football tournament in New Zealand, held in Taupo in November, with the 9th and 10th grade sides coming away victorious. The club also entered a second 9th grade team, along with 13th and 17th grade teams, as 1500 players from across the country came together for the McCartney Invitational Tournament.
The 9th grade Wests Titans (pictured left) had a tough Saturday round of matches but qualified for Sunday play. Hamish Mulvey was a standout between the posts during pool play. The final was something of a local derby, being against Kapiti Coast United.

William Sule scored twice in the first 10 minutes, and the side took a 2-1 lead into the break. Much to the delight of the supporters, further goals from Jameel, Joe and an own goal had the Titans claiming the trophy with a 5-1 drubbing.

The 10th Grade Wests Lions (right) had five games over the weekend and coaches Brian Scott and Dave Waine were "proud and delighted" with the performances produced.

Having won the Wellington 10th grade Promo competition, they went to Taupo with confidence and it showed.

The Lions scored an impressive 26 goals and conceded just once, showing their mettle to play on in one game with no subs, as one player was rushed to hospital following a head clash.
