Successful Upper Hutt tournament for Western Suburbs Girls
On Saturday 9th March, three girls-only teams represented Western Suburbs at the annual Upper Hutt "Kick it" girls only tournament. This year it was played at Davis Field in Trentham. Wests had U14, U12 and U10 teams present.
It was a very well organised and well run tournament, with girls-only teams coming from all over the greater Wellington region, and even one from Horowhenua-Kapiti combined.
A very high standard of football was played on the day, and there were a number of past, present and future Football Ferns and Capital Football women helping add development sessions and fun events to periods of the day when each grade had a break between games.
And our girls represented the club extremely well, with the U10 Galaxy Girls and the U12 Ferns bringing home the trophies for their grades. Two out of 3 for Wests made us the envy of the other clubs present!
The U10 Galaxy Girls won 4 out of their 5 games and some by huge margins. And they had some girls playing up a couple of grades too. The trophy for this grade was decided on Capital Football's recommended "fair play" basis for the grade - based on nominations by other team officials. And whilst all teams played well and it was a very pleasant and supportive environment for the girls, there were definitely some things that helped earn this team the trophy on the day. Such as being 6-0 up at half time, and after discussion/suggestions with the other team, allowing them to play all their subs (and a Wests one) so it was 8 against 5 in the second half, and the opposition scored a couple of goals and earned some pride. Well done girls, and your fabulous coaches/ref for the day (Esther Longley, Dan Deller and Gus Hutton).
The U14 All Stars were missing a couple of their usual team mates (due to injury and other absences) and faced some very strong opposition from the other clubs throughout the day. They didn't win every game but had a win and a draw amongst their results and played some good football - always keeping in with a chance throughout the games and giving it everything until the final whistle. Again, a credit to their club. Thanks to coach Steve Phelan and all the supportive parents.
Overall, it was a fun day and a really good event to mark the near-end of the summer girls-only league. And we showed that Wests have a really strong girls-only programme and can foot it with any other club in the region.
You'll see the two beautiful "Kick it" trophies proudly displayed in the trophy cabinet at the clubrooms for the rest of the year. Don't be surprised if a confident young girl comes up to you while you're admiring it, and says that she was in the team that won it!
