Capital Football Update

While many enjoyed a relaxing Labour weekend, the majority of the football community headed to Napier for the National U19 tournament.

There were a number of our local club teams in action who produced some fantastic results. In the second-tier Satellite competition, it was an all-Wellington final between Waterside Karori and Island Bay United.

Both sides couldn’t be separated after 120 minutes and headed to the spot to decide the winner. It took one save on the 10th penalty to decide the match with Waterside Karori taking the game 5-4 on penalties.

In the main draw, Western Suburbs made their way through to the final on the back of two 4-0 victories and a 3-0 win over Wellington United.

Wests went up 2-0 against Birkenhead United only to find themselves locked at 3-3 after 90 minutes. The game looked set to be decided on penalties when Birkenhead dealt a cruel blow to Wests, scoring the winner in the final minute of extra-time to take the competition 4-3.

A full list of results can be found at cityrovers.co.nz under the Under 19 tab.

National Women’s League

A massive congratulations to the Capital Football National Women’s League squad who produced a fantastic display against previously-unbeaten Mainland Pride in Christchurch. Two late goals from Kelsi Rutene and Emma Main secured a 2-1 win for the girls and gives them plenty of confidence going into their game at 1pm this Sunday against Northern Football Federation at Petone Memorial Park.
